Nicolette Nordin Heavey, Storyteller and Educator

Nicolette lived a “storied” childhood.  The product of a British mother and Swedish father, she traveled around Europe and the Middle East. Nicolette uses her life’s observations to create stories that open doors of learning and personal growth.  She tells, gives workshops and does storytelling residencies for preschoolers through adults.

Nicolette is seen weekly at The Book Rack in Newburyport; tells and gives teacher workshops at Bright Horizon Children’s Centers; is a roster teller/teacher for a high school personal narrative development program, StoriesLive©, and is currently providing multiple “Family Engaged Literacy” programs in Methuen, N. Andover, Andover and Lawrence to deliver storytelling through the support of the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council (Lawrence, Mass.).

Nicolette has been selected to tell folktales and original fairytales at the Boston Globe Children’s Festival, Three Apples Storytelling Festival, and Sharing the Fire, a conference for New England storytellers.   She has also won acclaim for her personal narratives; she has been twice a monthly winner at massmouth’s Boston story slams; was awarded third place overall for her personal story in 2010; and was selected to perform at Slam Nation (First Person Arts in Philidelphia) in 2011.

Testimonials

We invited her to come in this morning for our annual Holiday celebration which is normally attended very well by parents. She was excellent! Her stories were very appropriate, engaging and interactive. Nicolette is energetic and able to hold the attention of various age groups with ease. An added surprise was that she gave each child a story (The Mitten and it's props) to take home and hopefully read with their family. She also gave each family a cd of her stories.  Several parents commented on how much they enjoyed her. We are hoping to be able to invite her back again...she was wonderful!  From Diane Nutt, Director, KidStart, Lawrence, MA

The children really enjoyed it!  [The Hero’s Journey program].  They were all very engaged and took some risks amongst their peers.  They seemed to all gain a little more confidence in themselves and even in their writing.  – Jackie Bellacqua, Pam Lang and Tom Milius, Literacy teachers at South Lawrence East Middle School

“From telling my story, I now don’t fight with my brother as much.”  6th grade student

I learned to not be shy, just say your story.  6th grade student

“I like how different it was.  Most of the stories we do are writing down words, but this one you just say it from your mind.”  middle school literacy student

I love you….the kids love you and we love the way you handle the whole program…. Very smoothly and professionally… with a smile…. Can’t wait to see you … kids are psyched!.  Patty Frey, English Teacher, Lynn Classical High School
